Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had abandoned the family, and so she was raised by her mother, grandmother and godparents. When she was a young girl Ford experienced anxiety related to an obsessional disorder. Ford's passion for acting started as a child. She was a part of the National Youth Theatre. She got into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. After just a week she decided it wasn't for her. Ford decided to apply for admission to Central School of Speech and Drama and getting a spot after her third try, applied and won acceptance to Central School of Speech and Drama. A classmate of hers was Shaun Dingwall, who would be later reprise her role as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford received her degree in 1993. But, before then, Ford made a television debut, appearing as a character in Surgical Spirit in an episode from 1990. Ford took the professional name Catherine Tate. Tate made appearances on television during the Nineties in shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Tate also performed regularly in the theatre, eventually becoming a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. However, Tate was soon gaining notice for her stand-up comedy and added stand-up comedy to her repertoire in 1996.
